This ending is loosely is based on William Ellery--a central figure in Newport's Stamp Act riot. Ellery was one of the three principal organizers of the Stamp Act demonstration- when the effigies were hung. There is debate about Ellery's role during the riot. Some say that Ellery or his friends paid off a man to instigate the altercation that sparked the riot. It seems, though, that Ellery and his fellow elites lost control of the situation, especially given that the "mob" successfully secured the release of John Webber.
Ellery did go on to sign the Declaration of Independence and Articles of Confederation. He also was an abolitionist and held several positions in the government of Rhode Island, including tax collector.
