This ending is loosely based on Rhode Island Governor Samuel Ward. The Governor during the Stamp Act riot, Ward was vehemently opposed to the Stamp Act. He later allowed the legislature to drag its feet over providing compensation for the property destroyed in the riot, and eventually to not provide any compensation at all. Ward was also the only colonial governor to refuse to enforce the Stamp Act. An ardent Patriot, he served in the Continental Congress but died in early 1776 of smallpox in Philadelphia.
