Swallow continues writing for the Patriot cause during the American Revolution. He goes on to sign the Declaration of Independence and is a member of the Continental Congress until 1770 when he has to resign due to his declining health. He moves to Providence because Newport's economy is devastated after being occupied by the British army during the war. He lives there until his death in 1785.
