It was difficult to maintain a neutral stance during the American Revolution. Those who managed to maintain neutrality had the benefit of playing to both sides. Many people who were not politically motivated wanted to keep their heads down and wait out the war. 

​It is true that Newport was economically devastated by the war
--more so than most colonial towns. A number of Newport merchants moved to Providence in order to continue in their trade.
