Swallow is known as a Patriot who advocates for American liberty but is uncomfortable with the violent aspects of the Patriot cause. He supports the Patriot cause throughout the war by writing pamphlets and newspaper articles. He leaves Newport during the American Revolution to avoid the occupying British army. After the war, he becomes President of Yale College and lives in Connecticut until his death in 1795.
