Swallow gets out food and drink for everyone, drawing people back. After eating and drinking, the crowd makes a bonfire under the gallows and watches the effigies burn. After the fire dies down, they disperse.

Howard, Moffat, and Johnston return from the ship the next day to a seemingly calm town. That evening, things escalate. Someone gets into an altercation with Howard, and a crowd gathers with painted faces and axes. Howard and Moffat, fearing for their lives, flee immediately. Johnston is determined to stay, but his friends convince him to give up his position and leave.

The mob reaches Howard's house and starts bashing in windows. Should Swallow try to stop the destruction?
Yes. Things are getting out of hand!
No. This is what he wanted to happen!
